H2S Alive (Enform-ESC)

This is a classroom-based 1-day Enform (ESC)-certified course in H2S safety available at LSS regularly. LSS partners with Enform (ESC) to make sure we can bring you H2S Alive™ training, the gold standard in Alberta for workers in upstream oil and gas as well as other industries.

If you need to work in the oilfields or any petroleum handling facility, H2S Alive™ is typically mandatory for almost all employees and facilities staff, as the industry is committed to protecting you from the dangers of hydrogen sulphide gas including permanent injury and death. Other industries requiring H2S training include mining, sewage/waste treatment, agriculture, pulp and paper, etc.

Course Content

Hydrogen sulphide, or H2S, is a deadly poisonous gas that occurs naturally in high quantities in oil and gas products. Exposure to H2S can result in immediate death or permanent injury, and must be prevented or controlled to minimize harm to the worker. H2S Alive™ is the definitive hydrogen sulphide safety ticket in Alberta, and satisfies H2S safety training needs of all major industries.

Course topics include the following:

– Physical properties of hydrogen sulphide
– How to protect yourself from contact with H2S
– Gas detection techniques
– Use of breathing apparatus (SCBA and SABA)
– Rescue techniques

In this course you’ll learn all about H2S: how to detect it, where to expect it, how to avoid it or escape it in a release. You’ll learn the emergency techniques so you can avoid H2S exposure in the event of a detected leak or release, and steps you can take to protect yourself and others. You’ll also learn how to use gas detection monitors and sampling pumps before entering untested and potentially hazardous areas and how to safely and successfully use SABA and SCBA for escaping from or working in areas with hazardous H2S concentrations. You’ll also cover artificial respiration, rescue strategies and techniques, including details on confined space area rescues and introduction to technical high-angle rescues.

Prerequisites and PPE

You don’t need to complete any other courses or have any prior experience to enroll in this course. You must be able to put on a mask and breathe under air, and be able to participate in rescue drag techniques.

You don’t need to bring along any personal protective equipment (PPE).

Note: All courses require you to have government-issued photo ID.
